I do a lot of hiking in the back-country of Colorado and come across a lot of small streams and lakes. I always thought it would be great to have a small, lightweight rod and reel to fish for trout while I’m exploring. My wait is over.
This started as an article on foraging wild edible and medicinal plants. Then Schoeny asked about a “Wild Garden” on the SurvivalCache forum and my mind started asking questions: 1) Why do we just forage what has grown? 2) Why can’t we plant and harvest the very same plants we look for?
On a cold spring day in Zion National Park, we woke during our practice bug out exercise with the need for some ‘hot’ food. As the water was being boiled over the open fire and the hot chocolate found; Richmoor’s Hash Brown O’Brien was also grabbed.
We all bring skills, experience and education to the discussion, which is what makes our “neighborhood” so great. These assets differ by person and age group, but that adds to the diversity needed for new ideas and creating a balanced outlook.

In true SurvivalCache fashion, we are looking at a topic that we are almost positive has never been covered before on a survivalist website….”Survival for Vegans”. Of course the only person that could tackle this topic is the legend…Captain Bart.
First of all what is survival? It is quite simply what we’ve all been doing since we were born. We provide for ourselves shelter, fire, water, medical, food, and social life, these are the foundation of our existence. Without these core principals, our very existence is at risk.
