Ruger 10/22 Barrel FAQs

Q: Is the Ruger 10/22 Barrel Band necessary?

A: The short answer is no, you do not necessarily need the barrel band. Either way, it is mostly down to your personal preference, style of shooting, and individual needs.

Ruger has ensured that what you are getting is reliable and accurate as it comes. If you are using your Ruger for shots within about 40-75 yards, you should be fine to keep the barrel without noticing any reduced accuracy and issues with the size of grouping.

Generally speaking, the argument is that the barrel band is mostly for cosmetic purposes. Some shooters argue that barrel bands decrease the accuracy of shots over longer ranges as they put tension on the barrel.

Free-floating the barrel can reduce uneven pressure caused by the stock which in turn can increase the accuracy. This is especially true if your stock is made of wood which can warp over time.

Free-floating can also reduce the vibrations for lightweight barrels and better control the harmonics.

Q: Are Ruger 10/22 barrels interchangeable?

A: Changing the barrel of your Ruger can increase your power and accuracy. If you match a barrel with the same profile, it will be able to attach successfully.

While plenty of shooters will do just fine with the factory-fitted barrel, some shooters will benefit from changing the barrel over. By replacing the barrel, you can potentially reduce your group size.

Competitive shooters may prefer a bull barrel which improves accuracy. Typically, heavier barrels absorb vibrations better and can lower recoil. Length also plays a part in why shooters choose to change their barrels. For example, 22” barrels seem to out-perform others on accuracy.

Longer barrels increase the exit velocity and range of bullets while shorter barrels also tend to increase the amount of recoil. You should also take into account the conditions that you will be using your Ruger in as some barrels are more/less susceptible to weather such as wind.

No matter what your reasoning is for changing your barrel, there will be plenty of options available for you to consider.

Q: How long is a Ruger 10/22 Barrel?

A: A Ruger 10/22 factory-fitted barrel is 18.5” long (470mm). Carbine rifle models have a slightly reduced barrel length. This means that the rifle is easier to maneuver within confined spaces.

Ruger also designed the 10/22 with this barrel length to provide an effective overall velocity and range to suit a variety of uses. To protect against concealment, there are strict laws on overall rifle lengths and minimum barrel lengths.

If you change your barrel, you should measure it to ensure that it complies with the law. This can be done by inserting a dowel rod into the muzzle until it stops at the breech face or the face of the bolt.

Next, make a mark on the dowel at the endpoint where it emerges from the gun. Remove the dowel and then measure the length. Always check that your rifle is unloaded first.
