A large portion of the United States population lives within urban environments. This means that as much as we talk about wilderness survival skills, many urban survival skills are just as important.
That is why in this article I will be discussing six urban survival skills that everyone should know.
6 Urban Survival Skills
Sometimes this is referred to as being the “grey man” or “do not be a tourist.” Simply it means knowing how to not draw attention to yourself.
Generally, the best way to accomplish this is by altering your appearance. While there are differences from person to person, most people in an urban environment have a certain look to them.
Do your best to match what others are wearing. If you work in a profession that uses uniforms or has a certain look to it, it would be a good idea to carry an extra set of regular clothing that you can change into.
Avoid wearing clothing that drastically stands out or promotes a particular agenda.
Don’t Get Involved
This one may be hard as we all have topics that we feel strongly about. But in the event of civil unrest or large gatherings remain in the background and remain silent. A few wrong words can draw unwanted attention and could put your safety as well as those you love at risk.
Be Able To Defend Yourself
Most people view this as having a weapon such as a firearm or a knife on your person. And while I am not saying that is a bad idea they can get you into just as much trouble as they can get you out of.
In my opinion, one of the best weapons to have for self-defense is your body. This means if you are a healthy individual you should be in the best physical shape as possible. Tools can become inoperable or taken away from you but if you are physically fit you should be able to handle several threats at once or able to run away from a dangerous situation.
I harp on this ability all of the time because technology has made us blissfully unaware of our surroundings. But it is critical to be aware of your surroundings at all times.
Know what is going on around you near and as far as you can see. Are there people nearby that do not look right? Are there crowds forming or something that seems out of place? It is important to be aware of what is going on in your proximity so that you can hopefully be proactive rather than reactive.
Know Your Exits
This does not only apply to the exits in a restaurant or movie theater. It is paramount to be familiar with the area of an urban environment especially since many of them are large and vast.
Familiarize yourself with the landscape so that you know the roads and best routes to take if a situation should turn hostile.
Safe Zones vs. Danger Zones
Many urban areas, especially large ones, have areas that are safer than others. Talk to residents and find out which areas are the “bad areas” of town so that you can avoid unintentionally putting yourself in a dangerous situation.
Wrapping It Up
The concrete jungle can be just as if not more dangerous than nature. They are both wildernesses in their own regard. What are some urban survival tactics that you believe are important that didn’t make it on the list? Sound off in the comment section below and thanks for reading!
